#5 Bye, bye 2017!

January 2, 2018

Every Mauritius travel guide talks about its friendly people from diverse origins that goes along with the coexistence of many different cultures. How open minded Mauritian people really are can be seen during Christmas time. Not only Christians were celebrating. Many inhabitants of Flic en Flac for example, no matter what their religious background is, were celebrating Christmas Eve. “It´s about family and being together with the beloved ones” assumes Karuna Loday, a local saleswomen of Hindu faith. “Christmas is for everyone, the same as our festival of light, Diwali. We are proud of our multicultural society and as we Hindus share our Diwali cakes with our Christian friends and neighbors, they do the same during Christmas”. Indeed, one could see that Christmas plays a major role in Flic en Flac, with decorated trees being found in many houses and with the shops being overcrowded on Christmas Eve.

But while Christmas has mostly been celebrated inside the house, Flic en Flac will see an influx of people who will be celebrating New Year’s Eve at Flic en Flac beach. Especially with the recently created solar lamps along the public beach near the police station, Flic en Flac has to prepare itself for many visitors during the evening of the 31 December and the morning of the 1st January.

However, when all festivities are over, all cakes eaten, and all drinks empty, how to find a way back to one´s original weight? “I go running at the beach; and my passion is waterski – whenever I have time I spend my time on skies” says Pravesh Padaruth, a 30 year old waterski instructor at the Sofitel Hotel. Marlena Lewandowska, a 31 years old women’s coach states: “I recently discovered the Maurirando Hiking Group on Facebook; they offer different outings every week!” Indeed, Maurirando puts its emphasis on making hiking accessible to everyone; hence, most of the hikes are easy or moderate and the pace is rather slow. Hiking trips for women only or for the whole family are also in the monthly agenda as well as night hikes or early morning hikes.

Of course, there are other sports available – we are curious when the Smart City´s swimming pool will open its doors. And what do you do to regain your fitness? Share your secrets with us!
